On Friday, February 1, Grand Central Terminal, the world-renowned Beaux-Arts masterpiece that sits at the center of our bustling neighborhood – kicked off its year-long centennial celebration. Below we’ve put together a collection of links and resources to help you learn about and experience the greatness of the building that continues to capture our imaginations and inspire that same sense of awe that caused the New York Times to write in their 1913 review of the newly opened rail terminal: “without exception, it is not only the greatest station in the United States, but the greatest station, of any type, in the world.”

On Time/Grand Central at 100 (March 6 – July 7, 2013): To celebrate Grand Central’s 100th birthday, MTA Arts for Transit and The New York Transit Museum will present an exhibition featuring the work of more than a dozen contemporary artists who capture and reimagine moments in Grand Central Terminal – the site of the beginning and end of countless journeys for millions of travelers over the past century – and connect them with the present.

Grand Centennial Parade of Trains (May 11 – 12, 2013):  Stop by for a free, family-friendly weekend filled with an extraordinary assembly of historic train cars, a model train collectible show, and fun activities at “Kid Junction,” sure to appeal to railroad enthusiasts of all ages. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENTS WE COLLABORATED ON TO CELEBRATE THE CENTENNIAL

In order to commemorate and celebrate Grand Central Terminal’s centennial, we collaborated with MTA Metro-North Railroad to refurbish the Taxi Stand at the corner of Vanderbilt Avenue and 42nd Street along with one of the 16 original, historic street lights that once lined the elevated drive around the Terminal. Hit the Transit Museum Annex in the Terminal and then hop a train up to the New York Botanical Garden to see this year’s spectacular Centennial-themed Holiday Train Shows

In celebration of the Grand Central Centennial, The New York Botanical Garden is showcasing a miniature Grand Central Terminal from its Holiday Train Show collection. The Terminal is one of more than 140 scaled replicas of New York landmarks made of plant parts. Artistically crafted by Paul Busse’s team at Applied Imagination, the landmarks are made of natural materials such as bark, twigs, stems, fruits, seeds, and pine cones and include the original Penn Station and Yankee Stadium, Radio City Music Hall, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, The New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Bridge. The show will take place through Sunday, January 13, so book your tickets right away!

Also not to be missed is the eleventh annual Grand Central Holiday Train Show at the New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex (Grand Central Terminal, Shuttle Passage – 718-694-1600) The show will run through February 12, 2013. For more information, click here.
